John served in the Royal Canadian Navy as an Air Fitter (aircraft engine mechanic). He was a member of VU32 Squadron, stationed at H.M.C.S. Shearwater, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Wilfrid Laurier University
John left high school after grade 11 to join the Royal Canadian Navy. Following his release from the armed forces he decided to earn his high school diploma. His success as an adult student inspired him to pursue a University education. He applied to Wilfrid Laurier University as a mature student. His first success was to attain a Diploma in Business Administration, but that success ignited a spark. If he could achieve the Diploma, perhaps he could go on to attain a Degree? He did just that! Putting his personal life on hold he spent several years as a part-time student and finally earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Canadian Studies.
College Instructor at Conestoga College - Ontario Small Business Courses
Two years as a part-time instructor teaching business courses at Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology. The program was part of the Small Business certificate programs offered by the Ontario government. He also taught a one year Entrepreneurial course at the college.
Performed several times as a stand-up comic
Blessed with a sense of humour, John often wondered if he good have any success as a stand-up comic. He had to prove to himself he could do it. Although a career in comedy was not in the cards, he did prove he had the courage to do it. His performances included several appearances at fall fairs, one television show as well as performing at Lulu's Roadhouse in Kitchener Ontario. In these appearances he had the honour and good fortune of appearing on the same show as Clint Holmes (Playground of My Mind) and 50's superstar Del Shannon (Runaway).
